Individual, couple & family psychotherapy
.
Hi, I’m Amy! I have worked as a social worker for over 20 years. Most recently from 2012-2019, I worked as an individual & family therapist at a public agency, where I had the privilege of working alongside young people (13-25 years old) and/or their parents for single sessions in our walk-in counselling clinic, and for longer term therapy. I have been in independent practice since 2017 (full-time since 2019). I have extensive experience working with youth, adults, couples, families and communities, facing a wide range of issues including but not limited to:
- anxiety/social anxiety/panic
- trauma
- shame/guilt
- self doubt / feelings of “not measuring up” (to measuring sticks which may or may not even interest you)
- the “something is wrong with me” feeling
- depression
- grief
- anger
- eating “disorders”
- chronic pain
- “addictions” (desiring a different relationship with alcohol or other drugs)
- the effects of psychiatric diagnoses
- gender identity & gender transition
- polyamory & non-monogamy
- uncoupling
- parent/youth conflict
- self-harm/suicidal thoughts
- people who use violence in relationships
- incarceration
- the effects of colonialism, racism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, ableism (and their intersections) on identity and mental health.
My work is guided by a commitment to social justice and is informed by narrative therapy, anti-oppression and intersectional feminist frameworks. What does this means in terms of what you can expect? To learn more about the philosophy and ethics that guides my practice click here.
In addition to my independent practice, I offer clinical consultation & a non-hierarchical approach to clinical supervision at Breakaway Community Services, a harm reduction agency in downtown Toronto.
I have been involved in the teaching of narrative therapy since 2014. I am on faculty at the Narrative Therapy Initiative in Salem, MA, Re-Authoring Teaching, in Vermont and at the Narrative Therapy Centre of Toronto.
I am a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and of the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) and my services are covered by many health benefit plans.
